Carlos Alcaraz’s withdrawal, Jack Draper also pulled out, forcing the organizers to reshuffle the seeds and adjust the men’s bracket.

Without the Spaniard, the tournament loses its biggest favorite and opens up even more. Jannik Sinner inevitably remains the main reference point, the world No. 1 and the player to beat, but the feeling is that this Madrid is even less hierarchical than expected.
<div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{"url":"https://www.aceanddoublefault.com/subscribe?","text":"Subscribe","language":"en"}" His possible second-round path changes as well: with Draper’s withdrawal, Alex Michelsen moves into the seeded positions as No. 33, making that section slightly lighter and giving Federico Cinà an even more interesting opportunity to try to build a run.

Further ahead, however, the level remains extremely high. Andrey Rublev and especially Joao Fonseca represent very serious obstacles, as do Alex De Minaur and Ben Shelton in the central part of the draw. Sinner’s path, in short, will not be easy, but Alcaraz’s absence certainly places even more of the tournament’s weight on his shoulders.

Lorenzo Musetti’s section is also very interesting. Seeded No. 6, he benefits from Draper’s withdrawal as well: his possible Round of 16 could now be against Hubert Hurkacz or Michelsen, a slightly less aggressive path compared to the original version of the draw. Good news for a player who can realistically think big on clay.

In the bottom half, Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev lead a more unpredictable section. Flavio Cobolli remains one to watch closely: his quarter, with Dimitrov, Learner Tien and Khachanov, is still difficult but open. Felix Auger-Aliassime and Casper Ruud seem to have a quieter path, but potentially a very solid one.

On the women’s side, meanwhile, the picture remains unchanged and the impression is always the same: total balance, with the world’s top three players — Sabalenka, Rybakina and Gauff — ready to fight for the title.

Aryna Sabalenka opens the top half with a draw that looks manageable in the early rounds, but Jasmine Paolini and Naomi Osaka are players who can quickly change the tournament’s narrative. Iga Swiatek is in the same half, and a possible clash with Mirra Andreeva remains one of the most fascinating matchups of the entire week.

The bottom half features Elena Rybakina and Coco Gauff as the main references, but attention should also go to Jessica Pegula and Amanda Anisimova.

In short, Madrid certainly loses one major protagonist, but gains even more uncertainty.

Sinner remains the natural favorite, perhaps even more than before. But behind him, the group of contenders is wide, credible, and ready to take advantage. And on clay, where every match gets longer and every detail matters more, it takes very little to turn a favorite into a target.

More than a tournament of hierarchies, this Madrid increasingly feels like a tournament of opportunities.

Thanks for reading Ace & Double Fault - Stories, Matches & Tennis Culture! Not just as a surface, but as an identity. Clubs, player development, even the way the game was understood — everything revolved around the red clay. Even as global tennis evolved, Italy remained faithful to that tradition.

The arrival of grass breaks that pattern.

This is not simply an additional tournament, nor just a calendar decision. It’s a signal. It reflects the intention to complete a system that, until now, has been very strong — but incomplete. First Rome, with its clay Masters 1000. Then Turin, with the indoor ATP Finals. Now grass. In other words: no longer specialization, but a complete vision.

Because grass, more than any other surface, changes the game. It shortens rallies, rewards serve, imposes a different timing. It demands aggression, but above all adaptability. And historically, that has been one of the weaknesses of Italian tennis.

For years, Italian players arrived at Wimbledon with very little match play on grass, often without a real preparation context. It was a transition, not a true phase of the season. Now, instead, it could become part of the system.

And it is no coincidence that this decision comes now.

Italian tennis is living its best moment: a world number one, consistent presence at the top, and growing global interest. This is the stage where a system no longer just produces talent — it structures itself. It builds continuity. It creates an environment.

In this sense, grass becomes almost a necessary step.

If Milan is confirmed, as expected, even the choice of the city tells a story. Not only because of its infrastructure or international profile, but because of its positioning. A tournament there, immediately after Roland Garros, would automatically become a key stop on the road to Wimbledon. A transition point, just like Queen’s and Halle have been for years.

Valentin Vacherot is not a fluke: why he broke through so late

He didn’t arrive early. And others who arrive when they’re ready.

Valentin Vacherot clearly belongs to the second category. His semifinal, at home in Monte Carlo, against Carlos Alcaraz was not just a surprise result: it was, so far, the highest point on clay of a quiet rise, built away from the spotlight and far from the fast-track trajectories of modern tennis.

Thanks for reading Ace & Double Fault - Stories, Matches & Tennis Culture! And yet, in recent months, something has changed. Clearly.

A first answer lies in his path. Like Rafael Jodar (whom I discussed in a previous article), the Monegasque player chose college tennis in the United States, attending Texas A&M University. A different, less high-profile environment, but an extremely formative one. There, he built solid foundations: match rhythm, discipline, and the ability to handle daily competitive pressure.

That’s not a minor detail.

College doesn’t turn you into a champion, but it teaches you how to compete. And Vacherot came out of that system with one defining quality: consistency. Not isolated peaks, but a steadily rising average level.

The real leap, however, came in 2024, with three Challenger titles in the early months of the season. Then, at the end of 2025, the definitive breakthrough: first, the stunning victory at the Shanghai Masters 1000 — beating players like Rune and Djokovic — as world No. 204, and then a quarterfinal run at the Paris Masters 1000, which propelled him into the top 30.

That’s when his tennis took a clear step forward. Greater baseline solidity, higher quality in long rallies, but above all a new ability to stay in matches even against stronger opponents. He doesn’t unravel, doesn’t lose structure. He holds.

And that is exactly what has made the difference on the clay of Monte Carlo as well.

On this surface, his game finds a natural balance. He is not a pure attacker, but neither is he a passive defender. He is a builder — someone who works the point, waits for the right moment, and when it comes, knows how to be decisive.

But the real point is not technical.

It’s mental.

Vacherot doesn’t look like he’s playing above his level. He looks like he’s playing exactly at his level. And in a tournament like Monte Carlo, that’s a huge advantage. He has nothing to prove, no expectations to carry. He plays freely, but not carelessly. There’s a difference.

So we return to the original question: why so late?

Perhaps because his is a game that needs time. It doesn’t rely on explosive power or overwhelming shot-making. It grows through repetition, through experience, through understanding the game. It matures.

And when it matures, it becomes extremely solid.

It’s no coincidence that many players with similar paths break through later than early phenoms. Less hype, less pressure, more construction. And when they arrive, they are often more ready to stay.

The semifinal against Alcaraz was, inevitably, a reality check. Not so much in terms of the result, but the level. Because that is how the gap between a surprise and a top player is measured.

But ultimately, the point is another.

Vacherot is no longer a surprise.

He is a player who has found his time.

And in tennis, that is often the only thing that truly matters.

From college to an ATP title: Jodar’s unconventional A result that didn’t come by chance, but as the natural consequence of a path built differently from the traditional Spanish model. And today, with his rise to world No. 57, what only a few months ago seemed like a surprising climb has become a concrete reality.

It’s not just about numbers. It’s about how those numbers were built.

Jodar didn’t come through clay courts. Or at least, not primarily. His development has taken place mostly on hard courts and faster surfaces — almost heresy for a Spanish player. But it is precisely in this choice that the key to his identity lies.

Like many of his peers from other countries, Jodar chose an alternative route: college tennis in the United States. His experience at the University of Virginia proved decisive. Not only for the level of competition, but for the environment: structured, demanding, where competitive pressure intertwines with personal growth.

Those who followed him during that phase didn’t talk so much about talent — which was clearly there — but about maturity. His college coach, Andres Pedroso, described him this way: “He was a complete player, but above all a mature competitor, a winner.”

That mental solidity became the foundation of his rise. “College helped me a lot, not just as a player but also as a person. It taught me how to compete every day,” Jodar himself said. His decision to leave college at the end of 2025 to fully commit to the professional circuit was the first key turning point. Not an impulsive move, but a conscious step: “I felt it was the right time to try.”

2025 was the breakthrough year. Three Challenger titles — all on hard courts — a major leap in the rankings and, above all, a growing feeling: that he could consistently belong at that level. Not a sudden explosion, but a gradual construction. Tournament after tournament, match after match.

The transition from college tennis to the ITF and then ATP circuit is one of the most difficult in modern tennis. The pace changes, the level of opponents rises, and so does the pressure. Jodar, however, absorbed the change naturally. The confidence built in Challenger events did the rest, allowing him to step into the ATP Tour with an already mature approach.

The start of 2026 was the natural continuation. The Next Gen Finals at the end of 2025 had already provided important signals, but it was at the Australian Open that real confirmation arrived: coming through qualifying, reaching the main draw, and securing his first Grand Slam win. “Playing a Slam was a dream, winning my first match was something special.”

Then Miami. Once again through qualifying, once again growing. Wins over Hanfmann and Vukic, a tough battle with Etcheverry. And above all, a clear message: Jodar belongs at this level.

But the real leap has come now.

His first ATP title is not just a trophy. It’s the moment when a player changes status — from promising prospect to a real presence on tour. And the fact that it came so early — and on a fast surface — reinforces the idea that his path is not episodic, but structured.

Today he is world No. 57. Just a few weeks ago, he was outside the top 100.

What stands out, beyond the results, is his mental strength. Jodar is a player who always seems to know what to do in key moments. He doesn’t panic, doesn’t force, doesn’t get carried away. This attitude is the result of an unconventional path that exposed him early to different environments and forced him to adapt.

Technically, his game is complete and balanced. He is not one-dimensional. He can construct points patiently, but also accelerate when needed. “I try to be solid and aggressive when necessary,” he explained — a perfect summary of his playing philosophy.

Within Spanish tennis, Jodar represents something different. Raised in Madrid, he is part of a new generation trying to find space alongside Carlos Alcaraz, but with a distinct identity. Less explosive, more constructed. Less tied to clay, more adaptable.

His name now sits alongside other young Spaniards like Landaluce, in a transitional phase for the country’s tennis movement. But his story stands apart. He did not follow the traditional path. And for that very reason, today, he seems to have different tools.

Perhaps more complete ones.

“The best players in the world accept who they are,” Pedroso once said. They accept their style, their strengths, their weaknesses, and every situation that occurs during a match. That is where the ability to stay present, point after point, is born.

Jodar has learned this lesson early.

And his first ATP title, more than a destination, feels like confirmation that the road he chose — different, less traveled — was the right one.

Where can it take him?

Perhaps higher than expected. And perhaps, sooner than anyone imagined.

Who will be the next star of women’s tennis? Three different profiles, but with one very clear common denominator: the potential to reach the very top. Even the world’s top 10.

Efremova, the most spectacular: talent and aggression of a future star

When it comes to pure talent, Ksenia Efremova is probably the most advanced of the three. The daughter of a former player (her mother is ex-tennis player Julia Efremova), the young French player—Russian-born—has already made her mark in the biggest junior tournaments, imposing herself with an aggressive, fast, modern style of tennis. This year, for example, she won the Australian Open Junior title.

Her trademark is taking the ball early: she steps into rallies with incredible timing, moves forward whenever possible and isn’t afraid to take risks. An approach that can make a real difference in today’s game.

The feeling is that her “ceiling” is the highest of the group. If she handles the transition to the professional circuit, her rise to the elite could be very rapid.

She currently trains at the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy in the south of France.

Penickova, the most solid: a No.1 built to last

Less flashy but more effective, Kristina Penickova represents consistency at its best. The world No.1 junior—and also the daughter of former players (her parents are Tomáš Pěnička and Olga Hostáková, both former Czech players)—the American has built her rise on consistent results and a very complete game.

She may not have a single standout weapon like some of her peers, but she also has no obvious weaknesses. She can sustain rallies, defend well and accelerate when needed. Above all, she makes very few mistakes.

She is the classic profile that climbs the rankings almost quietly over time. And often, these are the players who end up establishing themselves among the very best in the world.

In 2025, she reached the Australian Open Junior singles final and won the doubles title. Still in doubles, she also won Wimbledon Junior.

Klugman, the most intelligent: technique and vision beyond her years

Hannah Klugman stands out for her maturity. Not just clean technique, but above all her ability to read the game, construct points and adapt to different situations.

The British player always seems to have a plan. She doesn’t force—she chooses. She doesn’t improvise—she builds. A rare approach at such a young age.

The real question mark is her physical development, which will be crucial in determining how far she can go. But from a tennis standpoint, the foundations are already those of a top-level player.

She is coached by Ben Haran, former coach of Daniel Evans and Jack Draper.

Last year in junior Grand Slams, she reached three finals: Roland Garros in singles, and the Australian Open and Wimbledon in doubles.

Three different paths, one possible shared destiny

Efremova, Penickova and Klugman represent three different ways of interpreting modern tennis: power and aggression, solidity and consistency, intelligence and vision.

The transition from junior to professional level remains the most delicate phase, and not all prospects manage to confirm expectations. But in their case, the signs are strong.

If they live up to their potential, the future of women’s tennis may already have three new names to remember.

And this time, not just in the junior circuit.

Sinner, absolute perfection: the Sunshine Double with a historic record

Nobody among the previous winners had ever managed it. An achievement that goes beyond the result, beyond the title, beyond simple consistency: it is pure dominance.

Winning Indian Wells and Miami is already, in itself, one of the toughest challenges on the tour. Two long tournaments, back-to-back, with completely different conditions and an extremely high average level. Doing it without dropping a set means never having a real dip. Not a bad day. Not a lapse. Not a drop in level.

That’s where the greatness of this feat lies.

In today’s tennis, defined by extreme balance, even the very best concede something. A distraction, a lost set, a complicated match. It’s natural. Sinner, instead, has removed even that variable. He played two perfect weeks. In fact, four.

And the right word is exactly that: perfection.

Not spectacular perfection made only of winners and highlights. But systemic perfection: management, rhythm, clarity. Sinner doesn’t need to dominate every point — he controls every match. And when needed, he raises his level without ever losing the thread.

There is one detail that makes all of this even more impressive: mental consistency. Winning without dropping a set is not just a technical matter, but above all an emotional one. It means offering no openings. Never allowing the opponent to feel they can truly get into the match.

It’s a form of silent, constant, almost suffocating pressure.

And perhaps this is where Sinner has made the definitive leap. He is no longer just one of the best. He has become the one everyone else has to beat. And when a player reaches that level, everything changes: how opponents approach him, the weight of key moments, the very perception of the match.

But to truly understand the magnitude of this achievement, we need to look back.

In the men’s game, the Sunshine Double has been achieved by only a select few in recent history: Federer, Djokovic, Ríos, Agassi, Sampras, Chang, and Courier. All champions who defined eras. And yet, even they, along their paths, always left something behind. A lost set, a tough match, a moment of difficulty.

That’s normal. It’s part of tennis.

Sinner, instead, has done something different: he has eliminated even the unexpected.

In a context where even the greatest have always had to manage moments of crisis, he moved through two Masters 1000 events without ever offering a real opening to his opponents. He didn’t just win — he never truly looked like losing.

And that is what makes his Sunshine Double unique.

Sinner doesn’t just win. He controls.

And in modern tennis, that is the highest form of dominance.

Thanks for reading Ace & Double Fault - Stories, Matches & Tennis Culture! few would have predicted: Arthur Fils versus Jiri Lehecka. Two talents, two different paths, one thing in common — they are knocking hard on the door of the elite.

Thanks for reading Ace & Double Fault - Stories, Matches & Tennis Culture! Mensik knows something about that too. This first semifinal of the 2026 edition is further proof. One of these two outsiders will be playing for the title. And for both, it would be their first Masters 1000 final.

Fils arrives with the energy of someone playing without fear. The Frenchman has built his run on aggression and intensity: a powerful serve, an explosive forehand, and a constant desire to take control of rallies. When he is “on,” his tennis is simply hard to contain. But the real novelty in Miami has been his consistency: fewer dips, better management of key moments. On top of that, he won a quarterfinal against Tommy Paul that was practically lost: down 6–2 in the third-set tiebreak, he saved four consecutive match points and still managed to win the match.

On the other side stands Lehecka, perhaps less flashy but extremely effective. The Czech has displayed a more linear, clean, almost surgical style of tennis. Great baseline solidity, excellent timing, and an increasingly evident ability to read matches. He doesn’t overwhelm — he wears you down. And above all, he makes very few mistakes. His quarterfinal against Landaluce wasn’t easy either: two tight sets, 7–6 7–5, where he likely made the difference with his greater experience in handling crucial moments.

This is also a clash of philosophies.

Fils thrives on peaks: he accelerates, takes risks, accepts errors in order to impose his rhythm. Lehecka, on the other hand, constructs: he works the rally, waits for the right moment, and moves you out of position without rushing. Two opposite ways of interpreting modern tennis.

But there is another element that makes this semifinal particularly intriguing: handling pressure.

For both players, this is a first at this level in a Masters 1000 of this magnitude. Fils seems to have a more emotional, almost instinctive approach. Lehecka appears calmer, more rational. In a match like this, that detail could make all the difference.

From a technical standpoint, the key will be who manages to impose their rhythm. If Fils can take control of rallies early, he can dictate the match. But if Lehecka manages to extend exchanges and take time away from the Frenchman, the match could swing in his favor.

In any case, one thing is certain: this semifinal tells the story of a generational shift already underway. It’s no longer just about the future. It’s the present.

And Miami, once again, proves to be the perfect stage for the new hierarchy of world tennis.

Thanks for reading Ace & Double Fault - Stories, Matches & Tennis Culture! history. His victory at the Australian Open – which secured him the Career Grand Slam at just 22 years old – and his emphatic title in Doha reinforced a clear feeling: at that moment, tennis had an undisputed ruler.

Then, suddenly, something cracked.

Subscribe now

Between Indian Wells and Miami, the two tournaments that traditionally reflect the form of top players in the early part of the season, Alcaraz showed unexpected weaknesses. His semifinal loss to Medvedev in California can be seen as almost physiological: he was facing one of the toughest opponents on hard courts. But the third-round exit in Miami against Korda had a very different flavor. More than a setback, it felt like a signal.

The inevitable question is: what is really going on?

A first explanation is physical. Alcaraz comes from intense months, with an almost perfect start to the season and a workload of extremely high-intensity matches. Sixteen consecutive wins. His explosive, high-energy playing style leaves little margin: when even a small percentage of sharpness is missing, the entire system is affected.

But stopping there would be reductive.

There is also a mental aspect. After achieving a milestone as significant as the Career Grand Slam, it is natural – even for a phenomenon – to experience a phase of physiological “emptiness.” The hunger that takes you to the top is not always the same one that keeps you there, at least in the short term. And the United States, with its media pressure and sky-high expectations, amplifies every minor dip.

He may also have felt some pressure from the growing comparisons: after those 16 consecutive wins, analysts had already started drawing parallels with Novak Djokovic’s extraordinary record of 43 straight victories between late 2010 and early 2011 (essentially winning every tournament he played) before being stopped in the Roland Garros semifinal.

That the mental factor plays a major role is beyond doubt. The Spaniard showed clear signs of frustration both in Indian Wells and Miami. “Sometimes I get tired of playing against Roger Federer in every round,” he said after a tough third-round win over Rinderknech, later adding: “It really feels like my opponents play at an incredible level… I have the feeling it always happens against me.” The nervousness was also evident in the match lost to Korda. Turning to his box, he said: “I can’t take it anymore, I want to go home right now!” All signs that something is not quite right.

Then there is the tactical issue. Opponents are learning. More and more. Against Alcaraz, clear patterns are emerging: slowing down the pace, extending rallies, taking time away from him. Medvedev executed this plan perfectly. Korda, despite having different characteristics, replicated some of these solutions, producing an almost flawless performance.

Finally, a detail that is often overlooked: the surface. Indian Wells and Miami, while both played on hard courts, present very different conditions compared to Melbourne or Doha. Bounce, speed, humidity: factors that matter more than it seems, especially for a player who relies heavily on timing and aggression.

So, are we looking at a warning sign?

Probably not. Rather, it is an inevitable phase in the growth – and management – of a champion who has accelerated every step of his career. Alcaraz remains the benchmark of the tour, but this brief dip is a reminder of a simple truth: in modern tennis, dominating without interruptions is almost impossible.

The real answer will come in the coming months, on clay. That is where we will understand whether this was just an episode… or the beginning of a new phase.

Miami Open gets underway: the tournament of surprises? on the calendar: the Miami Open, the second Masters 1000 of the season and a key stop in the so-called Sunshine Double. The women’s draw got underway yesterday, while today the men’s draw also begins.

Faster courts, different weather conditions and a unique atmosphere: Miami is often the tournament of surprises. In the 2025 edition, for example, it was Jakub Mensik who lifted the trophy, defeating Novak Djokovic 7-6 7-6. Djokovic, however, has chosen to skip the event this year.

Subscribe now

Men’s draw: Sinner leads, but the competition is fierce

The most anticipated name is obviously Jannik Sinner, fresh off his triumph at Indian Wells and now a benchmark on hard courts.

But the men’s draw is far from predictable. The main favorites are, as always, Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz (already champion here in 2022). However, Alcaraz could face a tricky second-round match against Brazilian rising talent Joao Fonseca.

Just behind them are Daniil Medvedev, a former Miami champion, and Alexander Zverev. But watch out for potential surprises: dangerous outsiders could include home favorite Ben Shelton, the unpredictable Kazakh Alexander Bublik, and defending champion Jakub Mensik.

As always, seeded players receive a bye and enter the tournament in the second round. Among the most interesting first-round matches are the clash between former Grand Slam champion Marin Cilic and Australia’s Alexei Popyrin, as well as Fonseca vs Maroszan.

Keep an eye as well on two young talents we will likely hear a lot about in the future, both awarded wild cards: French 2009-born Moise Kouame, facing Svajda, and 19-year-old Spaniard Rafael Jodar, who takes on Hanfmann.

Women’s draw: everyone chasing Sabalenka

If the men’s draw has two clear leaders, the WTA draw also starts with two main favorites: Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina, who recently contested a spectacular final at Indian Wells.

Just behind them, based on rankings, are Iga Świątek and Coco Gauff, although at the moment they do not seem in top form to seriously threaten the front-runners.

But as mentioned, Miami’s unique conditions make it an unpredictable tournament. That brings several other players back into contention. Among them, the Americans Amanda Anisimova and Jessica Pegula stand out, as well as the rising young Canadian Mboko.

Among the remaining first-round matches, a few are particularly worth watching. One is the clash between the ageless Venus Williams, who will turn 46 in June, and Britain’s Francesca Jones, whose story has drawn attention due to a congenital condition that did not prevent her from becoming a professional player.

Another interesting first-round match is Paula Badosa, former world No. 2, against Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich.

Players already through to the second round include: Boulter, Blinkova, Cirstea, Jacquemot, Kessler, Linette, Osorio, Siegemund, Sonmez and Tomljanovic.

The keys to the tournament

Quick adaptation to conditions (balls travel faster than in Indian Wells)

Physical endurance (heat and humidity play a major role)

Offensive tennis rewarded more than in Indian Wells

And above all: Miami is one of those tournaments where momentum matters more than ranking.

If Indian Wells is often about control and patience, Miami is the opposite: pace, aggression, and more open matches.

And that is exactly what makes it one of the most fascinating events on the calendar.

Who will win?

What do you think? extraordinary chapter to his young career. This is not just another major title, but a symbolic milestone that tells better than any statistic the level the Italian tennis player has reached.

Thanks to this success in the Californian desert, Sinner has become the youngest player in tennis history to win all the Grand Slam, Masters 1000 tournaments and Nitto Atp Finals played on hard courts, both outdoor and indoor. It is an achievement that confirms not only his talent, but also his incredible ability to adapt to and dominate modern tennis.

Subscribe now

The king of hard courts

Today’s ATP Tour is increasingly centered around fast surfaces. Between indoor tournaments, outdoor hard courts, and the two Grand Slams played on hard, the surface has become the main battleground for the best players in the world.

Sinner, however, has not merely been competitive on this surface — he has turned it into his kingdom.

His victories in hard-court Slams such as the US Open and the Australian Open, combined with his successes at the biggest Masters 1000 events (Indian Wells, Miami, Toronto, Cincinnati, Shanghai, Paris) and at the Nitto Atp Finals, paint the picture of a player capable of excelling in every context: from fast indoor courts to the slower hard conditions of tournaments like Indian Wells.

His tennis seems perfectly designed for the modern hard court game:

an increasingly powerful serve

one of the best returns on tour

relentless baseline pace

the ability to take the ball early and rob opponents of time.

A journey built over time

This dominance did not appear overnight. In recent years Sinner has worked methodically to complete his game.

Early in his career his offensive talent was already clear, but over time other qualities have emerged:

greater mental strength

a more effective serve in key moments

increasingly mature tactical management of matches.

The result is a player who now seems constantly in control of the match, even against the very best in the world. The only player who currently seems capable of consistently challenging him is Carlos Alcaraz, although the Spaniard had an off day at Indian Wells against Daniil Medvedev.

A record that defines a generation

The fact that this milestone arrives at such a young age makes the achievement even more remarkable. It is not just a statistical record — it represents the symbol of a new generation that has reshaped the landscape of world tennis.

Sinner is the face of this revolution. A player who grew up within the modern tennis system, accustomed from a very young age to competing at the highest level and capable of maintaining remarkable consistency in the sport’s biggest tournaments. Together with Alcaraz, he is already writing unforgettable pages in the history of tennis.

The future is only beginning

If this achievement already represents a historic milestone, the feeling is that for Sinner it is only an intermediate step.

At just 24 years old, the Italian has already built a résumé that many champions only achieve at the end of their careers. Yet his tennis continues to evolve.

Hard courts have become his natural territory. But his next goal will likely be to start winning consistently on clay. Last year he came within a whisker of winning the French Open, and this season Monte Carlo, Madrid, Rome and Roland Garros will undoubtedly be among his main targets.

For now, however, one fact remains: with his triumph at Indian Wells, Jannik Sinner has written another page in the history of tennis.

And looking at his trajectory, it feels like this is only the beginning.

The Boom of Italian Tennis: From a Solid Foundation to the Top of the World Rankings

Jannik Today, Italy can boast a group of players among the world’s best – with more than ten Italians in the ATP Top 100 and regular names at the very top of the men’s world rankings – a result that would have seemed unimaginable just fifteen years ago.

Subscribe now

A Journey Built with Method

The secret to this success is no accident: it has deep roots. About a decade and a half ago, the Italian Tennis Federation (today FITP) began investing decisively in so-called tennis schools – facilities dedicated to developing young players, with qualified coaches, structured technical and physical programs, and a network of youth tournaments across the country. Examples include competitions such as the Kinder Circuit and the Coppa delle Province, which range from local to national levels. Then there are regional aggregation centers, where promising children and teenagers are carefully monitored, as well as summer camps where young players can enjoy the sport while learning. Not to mention all the initiatives carried out off the tennis court, such as the “Racchette in classe (Racquets in the Classroom)” project. Over the years, this program has become firmly established within the Italian school system and now involves an ever-growing number of participants, with the aim of promoting physical activity and the culture of racket sports from early childhood. All of this has given rise to a generation of athletes raised in a structured environment, with skills and stimuli at an international level from the earliest stages of their development.

Numbers That Speak for Themselves

The trend is impressive. The total ATP points collected by Italian players in the Top 100 has steadily increased, from a few thousand to over 22,000 points in 2023‑24, a clear sign of the depth and competitiveness of the movement.

At the beginning of 2025, Italy reached a new milestone: for the first time in history, there are 11 Italian players in the ATP Top 100, making our nation the one with the most players in this elite global tier.

From Promises to Leading Players

The spearhead of this revolution is Jannik Sinner, who has risen to the top of the world rankings and has already won 4 Grand Slam titles – a historic achievement for Italian men’s tennis. But he is not alone: other young players such as Lorenzo Musetti, Flavio Cobolli, Luciano Darderi, Matteo Arnaldi, and Luca Nardi are steadily breaking into the Top 50‑100, demonstrating the depth of the new generation.

We must also recognize the contribution of Fabio Fognini, who paved the way, and Matteo Berrettini, the first Italian in history to reach the Wimbledon final. The crowning achievement is Italy’s three consecutive Davis Cup victories over the last three years, a sign that the entire movement has established itself among the world’s tennis elite.

Italian women’s tennis has also made its mark, with several players consistently in the WTA Top 100 and notable performances at major tournaments – proof of a complete and growing movement in the “women’s” sector as well.

The Foundations of a Winning Project

The new glory of Italian tennis is the result of strategic vision and long-term investment:

Development of tennis schools and talent centers, with trained coaches and high-level programs;

More tournaments across the country, from under-age competitions to ITF and Challenger events and up to ATP and WTA tournaments, giving young players frequent real-world competition experience;

A multidisciplinary approach, including specific physical training, mental preparation, and support to manage the pressures of modern competitive tennis;

A sports culture that has grown with the results: tennis has become one of Italy’s most-followed sports, with millions of players and fans inspired by the top champions.

A Domino Effect of Enthusiasm and Participation

International success has had a huge social impact. The presence of many Italian champions at the top of world tennis has sparked young people’s interest, increased club memberships, and made tennis a sought-after sport in many families. Numbers speak for themselves: the number of registered players grew from 130,000 in 2001 to 473,000 in 2021, reaching one million in 2024. Tennis is no longer “an elite luxury,” but a discipline in which many children see a real career opportunity, thanks to a system that supports them from childhood.

The Future? Sustaining the Movement

The results achieved are extraordinary, but the challenge now is to turn them into continuity: consolidating development pathways, maintaining the quality of youth competitions, expanding the player base, and continuing to innovate training methods. The path paved so far shows that, with vision and consistency, a movement can transform from a mere participant into a protagonist on the world stage.

When Betting Turns Toxic: The Dark Side of Tennis Gambling

Can Tennis Live With the Betting Italian player Lucrezia Stefanini reported similar threats.

Both players did what any professional athlete would do: they reported the incident to the ITIA (International Tennis Integrity Agency), then they went on court and played.

But the episode once again exposed a growing problem in professional tennis — the dark and often abusive world of sports betting.

A Perfect Sport for Bettors

Tennis has quietly become one of the most heavily bet-on sports in the world.

Every week, hundreds of matches take place across different circuits — from the elite tournaments organized by the ATP Tour and the WTA Tour to the smaller events on the ITF World Tennis Tour.

For bookmakers, tennis is ideal:

matches happen almost every day

live betting allows wagers on individual points, games or sets

thousands of players compete across different levels

But the same structure that makes tennis attractive for betting also makes it vulnerable.

Especially at the lower levels of the sport.

Outside the spotlight of Grand Slam tournaments, many professional players earn surprisingly little. Travel costs, coaching, and accommodation can quickly exceed prize money. For athletes ranked outside the top 150 or 200, a season on tour can be financially brutal.

That environment creates a dangerous combination: high betting volume and financially vulnerable players.

When Fans Become Abusers

The majority of tennis bettors are harmless spectators adding excitement to a match.

But a growing number cross a line.

Players regularly receive insults and threats on social media after matches that affected someone’s bet. Lose a tight match after a double fault, and the phone may explode with angry messages from gamblers who just lost money.

Some players have shared screenshots of messages wishing them injury or worse.

In recent years, governing bodies like the International Tennis Integrity Agency have tried to address both match-fixing and betting-related abuse.

But the scale of the betting market makes the challenge enormous.

Millions of bets are placed on tennis matches every week around the world.

Most players simply try to ignore the noise.

But sometimes, the abuse escalates.

The Shadow of Match-Fixing

Tennis has already experienced several scandals related to match manipulation.

Over the past decade, multiple players have received bans for deliberately losing games or matches in exchange for money from betting syndicates.

One of the most notable cases involved Italian player Daniele Bracciali, who was banned for life from the sport after investigations into match-fixing activities.

Those cases revealed how criminal networks sometimes target players competing in smaller tournaments where oversight is limited.

Even a single manipulated game can be enough to generate huge profits in the betting market.

And that is why threats like those reported by Udvardy and Stefanini are so disturbing: they show how pressure can move from financial temptation to outright intimidation.

Can Tennis Live With the Betting Boom?

Sports betting is now deeply embedded in the global sports economy.

Leagues and tournaments sign sponsorship deals with bookmakers. Betting companies promote live odds during broadcasts. Fans place wagers with a few taps on their phones.

Tennis is unlikely to escape that reality.

But the recent threats against players are a reminder that the relationship between sport and gambling has a darker side — one that can directly affect the athletes on court.

For now, the players will keep serving, rallying, and fighting for every point.

But somewhere beyond the baseline, another game is being played.

And it’s not always a fair one.

Thanks for reading Ace & Double Fault - Stories, Matches & Tennis Culture!
